The above quote is from the novel “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. Jane’s fiancé, Mr. Rochester, is having an affair with her best friend. When he discovers his betrayal, he becomes mad and tries everything to break up with Jane, but she refuses to leave him.

Rochester then becomes mad at the idea that he would ever cheat on her and so he tries to kill himself. This is a very interesting scenario because Mr. Rochester was not really mad at Jane for breaking off the engagement but rather mad at himself for not being able to control himself and control his feelings.
